Philip Lanieri Captures Liberty League Award

Philip Lanieri of Port Jefferson was recognized by Liberty League with a weekly award for his effort on the gridiron.

In a 21-20 win at Hobart College, Lanieri, a senior cornerback, intercepted the Statesmen's 2-point conversion attempt with no time remaining in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory for the Engineers. He also intercepted another pass, returning it for two yards, broke up two passes and had six tackles, including five unassisted. He was first on the team in solo stops and second total tackles. An All-Liberty League First Team honoree a season ago, Lanieri has 26 tackles in eight games this season. He has 16 unassisted and two for lost yards (3). He has also intercepted a team-high four passes (15 return yards) and broken up seven throws. He has eight tackles, three interceptions and two pass breakups in his last two games. A third-year starter, he had a team-high six interceptions last season when he also made 28 tackles (19 solo). Lanieri was an All-Liberty League Honorable Mention selection as a sophomore after making 44 tackles (29 solo) with a team-best four interceptions. His 14 career interceptions puts him in third place in school history, tied with three others.
