Joey Lyons Named Defensive Performer of the Week

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Joey Lyons of Harwood 20776 been named named Defensive Performer of the Week in women's soccer, the Liberty League has announced.

A freshman, Lyons open her career at RPI with a pair of shutout victories last weekend, shutting out Farmindale State and Western Connecticut State by matching 1-0 score lines. She stopped all eight shots she faced, including five in a 98-minute affair against the Colonials.

Lyons has played all 188 minutes for Rensselaer this season and has a perfect 0.00 goals against average and 1.000 save percentage. The former Southern High School standout has helped the Engineers to their first 2-0 start since 2008.

A four-year starter and two-time captain of her high school team, Lyons was First Team All-County three times, and All-State twice (Second Team as a junior and First Team as a senior). She helped her club team to a ECNL North American League Championship. She was also a four-year member of the track & field team, where she set the school record in the 800-meters and the steeplechase. Also on the swim team, she was a four-year participant at states, helping her earn the school's Outstanding Overall Female Athlete Award.

The Engineers (2-0) are back on the field this Saturday, when they take on Wilkes University for their home opener at East Campus Stadium (4pm).
