Benjamin Fazio Captures Liberty League Award

Benjamin Fazio of East Greenwich was recognized by Liberty League with a weekly award for an outstanding effort in cross country.

A junior, Fazio (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) led the Engineers with a third place finish, just over a second behind the runner-up, at the 24-school Inter-Regional Border Battle on Saturday. The race included teams from the Atlantic and Mideast Regions and was held at Rowan College at Gloucester County. Fazio ran the 8K course in a time of 24:49.29, a pace of 4:59, and RPI compiled 207 points to finish sixth. Fazio was previously tabbed on October 6 after he ran at a 5:00 pace and sprinted to victory in the 37th Annual Mike Woods Geneseo Cross Country Invitational, an 8k race at Letchworth State Park. He finished in 24:46.6 to lead Rensselaer to third place in the 38-school event. He was first among 534 runners, outdistancing the runner-up by nearly seven seconds (24:53.1). He was first recognized by the conference on September 15 after overcoming a three-second deficit with a quarter mile to go and winning the Saratoga Invitational by more than seven seconds. He ran the 6K course in a 5:04 pace, finishing with a time of 18:51.5. It was his first race of the season.
