Anthony Pilla Captures Liberty League Award

2015 Nov 24

Anthony Pilla of Nesquehoning was recognized by the Liberty League with a weekly award for a strong effort on the gridiron in a championship game win.

Pilla (Marian Catholic HS), a defensive end, was named Defensive Performer of the Week after he made eight tackles with seven unassisted, 5.0 behind the line of scrimmage (34 yards lost), three sacks (31 yards lost), a quarterback hurry and a forced fumble in a 20-13 victory over Buffalo State College. The Engineers fought back from a 13-3 deficit with the help of Pilla and the defense, which allowed only 38 rushing yards and 115 yards through the air. The Bengals came into the game averaging 29.9 points, 205.0 rushing yards and 203.5 passing yards per game. An All-Liberty League First Team honoree, Pilla finished first on the team in tackles for lost yards with 17.0 (76 yards) and sacks with 9.5 (61). He had 55 total tackles (33 solo), two forced fumbles and a pass breakup. A captain, he had at least three tackles in every game, including 14 in a victory over Merchant Marine.
