Andrew Gondek Named Men's Soccer Captain at RPI

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Andrew Gondek of Troy 12180 has been named a captain of the men's soccer team for the upcoming 2016 season.

Gondek, a senior center back, scored two goals and added two assists for six points last season. He had nine shots, including four on goal, while averaging an outfield player-best 95.4 minutes per contest. As a sophomore, Gondek started all 19 matches, collecting one assist and two shots (both on target). A graduate of Ballston Spa High School, he averaged 82.0 minutes per game. Appearing in 12 games (8 starts) in 2012, he picked up one goal on three shots.

The Engineers finished with a 12-5-3 overall record, including a 3-3-2 mark in Liberty League play. They qualified for the NCAA Tournament with an At-Large bid and defeated Steven Institute of Technology, 2-1, in overtime in the opening round. RPI then fell to Brandeis, 2-1, in double overtime.

Rensselaer opens its 2016 schedule on Thursday, when it takes on Sage College in the Union Classic (4:30pm).
